GOSPEL FOR TODAY: July 29, 2012

Sunday 29th July, 2012
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. G. 2 Kings 4:42–44. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs—Ps 144(145):10–11, 15–18. Ephesians 4:1–6. John 6:1–15 [St Martha].
Five barley loaves and two fish.

The seven miracles recorded by John, three of them associated with Passover time and life-giving nourishment, are presented not as deeds of power but as signs indicative of the nature of Jesus’ mission and the purpose of his ministry. In today’s miracle of the loaves and fish we discern a familiar pattern.

As at the Last Supper, in the Emmaus encounter and in our celebration of the Eucharist, the teaching word of Jesus precedes the ritual sharing of food—all pointing to the heavenly banquet. In our daily life, Jesus continues to be both the giver and the sustaining gift. We respond appropriately and are truly his followers when we apply his words—‘Do this in memory of me’—to everything he did for those in need.
